Ukrainian students make enormous drawing on facade: "The war is not over"

Whoever walks into the main building in Enschede cannot ignore it; with chalk markers the Ukrainian students of Saxion made a gigantic drawing on the glass facade of the Ko Wieringa building. With this they officially kicked off the Saxion for Ukraine action, the action with which Saxnow wants to raise 160,000 Euros for the Ukrainian students of Saxion. Moreover, it is not only about money, says student Anastasiia. "Just as much about attention. The war is not over, people should not forget that."

And Anastasiia Orlovska knows. She is perhaps the personification of why we at SaxNow are took the initiative for this action. The second-year CMGT student is from Kiev. Both her parents lost their jobs because of the war. Father Orlovska is an architect. "But who is going to build houses in a war. So his business is down." Mother Orlovska worked for a supermarket chain. The office in Kiev was bombed to the ground.

Anastasiia: "There is a special story about that. I had made a work of art for my mother that was hanging in that building. So I was terrified that it was gone. But where her whole building burned down, my painting survived like a miracle, together with a traditional Ukrainian shirt. That's all that remained."

Lots of sunflowers

Anastasiia also drew for most of the design of the facade drawing. With lots of sunflowers. "The national symbol of Ukraine. And everyone loves sunflowers." She is extremely happy with Saxion's action for Ukraine. "The more attention, the better. More attention means more help, both humanitarian and military. And bringing in the money would be super; financially it's not easy right now."

Oleksandr Kupri from Boetsya endorses this. His parents have since returned to his hometown, one of the sites of the heaviest fighting at the start of the morning. "It's a great initiative. I can hardly say much more about it. For my parents, hopefully things will return to normal soon, but for the whole war, I have no hope that it will end soon."

Anastasiia Verbytska (26) is doing a language course at Saxion. Three months ago she fled Odessa, where she was a radiologist. In particular, the fighting around the nuclear power plants made her and her mother leave. "That was really very scary. Now we live in a host family in Enschede. I think it's great that Saxion is doing this. It's like you said; it feels like a family."

How can you donate/contribute?

The benefit 'Saxion for Ukraine' has been set up by SaxNow. The Executive Board of Saxion supports the idea to take care of the Ukrainian students in this way. We want to raise money with the entire Saxion community, so the students can register for the coming academic year without any worries. For this we organize a number of things ourselves, but we also hope that students, employees, friend groups, alumni and the business community will take action. Of course we will pay attention to that.

Would you like to donate money, or have you raised an amount for the Ukrainian students? There is a special bank account for this: NL59 RABO 0317 2594 15, in the name of Stichting Saxion, stating SaxNow for Ukraine.

At the end of the academic year we will hand over the amount to the 72 students. Every cent is for them. Still have questions? Read more about the action in this FAQ. You can also send an e-mail to [email protected]
